Cat Microchipping

Lifelong identification with a cat microchip from Beehive Vets

Cat Microchipping

If you’ve welcomed a new cat into your home, now’s the perfect time to give them something for life – permanent identification and peace of mind.

Cat microchipping is a safe, simple, and reliable way to help your cat find their way back to you if they ever get lost.

Whether they’re a playful kitten or a seasoned explorer, cat microchipping offers security for them, and reassurance for you.

What is microchipping a cat?

Microchipping a cat is a safe, simple, and permanent way to link your cat to your contact details.

A cat microchip is a tiny device, about the size of a grain of rice, placed just under the skin between the shoulder blades.

It holds a unique number that’s linked to your details on a secure database, so if your cat ever gets lost, they can be scanned and returned home quickly.

The importance of microchipping cats

Cats are naturally curious and independent. Even the most home-loving cat can slip out through an open door or wander too far.

Without a microchip, it can be very difficult to reunite a lost cat with their owner.

Cat microchipping gives your pet a lifelong form of identification that can’t be lost, removed, or damaged like a collar and tag.

Whether you’ve just brought home a new kitten or want to make sure your older cat is protected, microchipping your cat is one of the kindest things you can do for their safety.

The benefits of cat microchipping

  • Permanent ID that stays with your cat for life
  • Increases the chances of a safe return if they go missing
  • Quick, safe, and relatively painless to implant
  • Required for travel abroad and some insurance policies
  • Gives peace of mind to you and your family

Also, if your cat is ever found injured, the microchip helps emergency vets contact you straight away.

Do cats have to be microchipped?

As of 10th June 2024, microchipping cats is a legal requirement in England.

All cats over 20 weeks old must be microchipped and registered to their owner’s current contact details. Failure to comply could result in a fine of up to £500.

At Beehive Vets, we make sure your pet is chipped to legal standards, and we can update your records if you move house or change phone numbers too.

Do indoor cats need microchipping?

Yes, absolutely. Even if your cat stays indoors, there’s always a risk they could escape through a window, get out during a move, or become disoriented in an emergency.

In these moments, a cat microchip can make all the difference between being lost and being found.
