Cat Vaccinations
As a responsible cat owner, keeping your feline friend safe from preventable diseases starts with timely vaccinations.
While it’s not a legal requirement in the UK to vaccinate your cat, it’s strongly recommended by vets and essential for their long-term health.
Whether you’ve just welcomed a kitten into your life or you’re caring for a much-loved older cat, vaccinations are one of the most important things you can do for their health.
Why cat vaccinations matter
Kittens should begin their vaccination course from around 8-9 weeks of age.
These early kitten vaccinations help build their immunity when they’re most vulnerable, and annual cat vaccines help maintain their protection as they grow.
Do indoor cats need vaccines?
Yes, even if your cat lives indoors, they’re still at risk from viruses that can be brought in on shoes, clothing, or through open windows.
What are cats vaccinated against?
At Beehive Vets, our comprehensive cat vaccination programme helps protect against:
- Feline panleukopenia (enteritis) – a severe and often fatal disease
- Feline herpesvirus & calicivirus – causes of cat flu, which can be serious, especially in kittens
- Feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) – a life-threatening virus that affects the immune system
- Rabies – not currently present in the UK, but essential if you’re travelling abroad
Our friendly team is always happy to explain in more detail based on your cat’s lifestyle and health.
Understanding your cat’s vaccination schedule
Here’s a quick look at a typical cat vaccination schedule:
- 8-9 weeks – First kitten vaccination
- 12 weeks – Second kitten vaccination
- Annual boosters – To maintain protection throughout adulthood
These regular cat booster vaccinations are vital to ensure immunity doesn’t fade, especially for viruses like cat flu and FeLV.
Cat vaccination costs
We understand that cost matters, and we keep our cat vaccination costs competitive while never compromising on care.
We’re happy to talk you through prices, including our kitten packages, which cover everything from vaccines to flea and worming treatment.
All the prices of our vaccinations and routine treatments are published on our website.
Are there side effects to cat vaccinations?
Most cats have no reaction at all, but some may experience mild side effects to cat vaccinations, such as:
- Temporary tiredness or reduced appetite
- A small lump after vaccination at the injection site
- Mild fever or discomfort
- More serious reactions such as pain at the injection site or anaphylactic reaction occur in fewer than one in ten thousand cats.
How long do cat vaccine side effects last?
The side effects usually pass within 24–48 hours. If you’re concerned or notice anything unusual, we’re always here to help.
Don’t forget, the side effects from a vaccination are far outweighed by the protection they provide!
