Our veterinary acupuncture services

Let’s explore how our pet acupuncture works at Beehive vets.

Initial Acupuncture Consultation & Assessment

The first acupuncture session is all about assessing what your pet can comfortably tolerate without stress, including how many needles can be used, before gradually working up to a full 20-minute treatment.

Our Veterinary Surgeon, Chloe, will take the time to understand your pet’s needs through a series of questions and a thorough clinical examination, allowing her to create a personalised plan for the sessions ahead.

Therapeutic & Wellness Acupuncture

Our therapeutic and wellness acupuncture focuses primarily on reducing pain and inflammation to support your pet’s overall comfort and mobility. Treatment points are chosen based on the body’s energetic systems, which closely align with nerve pathways, allowing for targeted and effective relief.

While it’s most commonly used to manage pain linked to musculoskeletal issues or cystitis, acupuncture can also benefit a wide range of other conditions, making it a versatile and holistic option for many pets.

Ongoing Support & Treatment Plans

Most treatments are carried out weekly, allowing us to monitor your pet’s progress closely and adjust their plan as needed.

A typical initial course lasts around 4 to 6 weeks, after which we’ll have a clear understanding of how your pet has responded and what ongoing support may be required to maintain the benefits.

This helps us create a tailored long-term plan that continues to support your pet’s comfort and wellbeing.

How veterinary acupuncture benefits your pet

Veterinary acupuncture can help improve your pet’s comfort and mobility while reducing inflammation, without the additional side effects that some medications can cause.

Treatments also promote relaxation, reduce stress, and support overall wellbeing, making it a gentle and holistic approach to keeping your pet happy and healthy.

How does acupuncture feel?

The needles are very thin and hair-like so some of them are virtually sensation-less. Others can be associated with a slight scratch, which tends to dissipate after the needle has been stationary a couple minutes.

Some pets are not suitable for acupuncture if they are not able to settle in the consult room environment. But many do settle and lay down for the experience. Some have even been known to fall asleep!

Acupuncture must legally be performed by a qualified veterinary surgeon. Safety threshold is high, as the needle size is much much smaller than the needles routinely used for vaccinations, other injections, or sampling masses and draining cysts. To reduce the risk of introducing infection, acupuncture is not performed on wet pets.

Acupuncture is primarily used to treat painful conditions of the bones, muscles and spine but can be beneficial for other conditions as well.
