At Beehive Vets, we know exactly how important your cats’ health and wellbeing is to you. Cats are a much-loved part of many families, indeed several of our practice team are graciously tolerated in our own homes by our various felines.
Unfortunately our pets can’t tell us when they’re feeling under the weather, so regular check-ups can play an important part in ensuring your cat gets the best care as they age.
Our commitment to you is to make it as easy and convenient as possible to take care of your cat at every stage of their lives, and we always aim to make decisions and plan their care together with you, after all, you know your cat best.
We created our Healthy Hive Clubs specifically to provide comprehensive care that also offers excellent value for money.
Our Healthy Hive Club already offers unlimited consultations, all your cat’s routine vaccinations, and delivers flea and worm treatments to your door, along with an extensive range of discounts and extras, but we wanted to add more!
From the first of March 2026 we now including two blood pressure checks per year on our cat plans, at no extra cost!
It’s not always obvious if your cat has high blood pressure
If you’re a cat owner you know they can be more than a little bit enigmatic. We never really know what they are thinking, so if they’re not feeling right it won’t always be obvious. Measuring blood pressure twice a year is just one way that we can help keep your feline friends happy and healthy for as long as possible, by spotting any potential issues early on.
Measuring blood pressure is a quick and painless process, much the same as happens to us at the doctors. An inflatable cuff is placed on your cat’s leg or tail, and the blood pressure reading is displayed on the monitor, allowing the vet to see how it compares to the normal range.
Why might my cat develop high blood pressure?
As cats get older they are more prone to hypertension, or high blood pressure, with academic studies suggesting that as many as 40% of cats over the age of nine will become hypertensive. It may be something that occurs on its own, or more commonly it can be a sign of an underlying condition such as chronic kidney disease, heart disease or hyperthyroidism.
Most cats won’t show any outward signs at first, but after a while they may develop sudden-onset blindness, or damage to your cat’s brain and internal organs.
The good news is that when we know about it, especially if we can diagnose early, we can usually manage high blood pressure very successfully with medication, and give your cat back their spark.
What are the signs that my cat has high blood pressure?
Cats are very good at masking when they don’t feel well, and of course many outdoor cats only return home to sleep, eat and scratch the sofa, so you may not immediately spot any changes in their behaviour. Without regular monitoring, it won’t necessarily be obvious if your cat’s blood pressure is high, but there are a few signs you can watch out for:
- Depressed mood,
- Lethargy,
- Becoming withdrawn,
- Disorientation,
- Seizures,
- Losing peripheral vision (causing them to misjudge gaps and heights),
- Bleeding in the eyes.
If you do spot any of these or are in any way concerned about changes in your cat’s habits or behaviours, please do talk to one of the team and we can make an appointment for your cat to come in for a comprehensive check-up and blood pressure test.
